Pta Volunteers

Research shows that when parents are actively involved with their children's education, students' grades are higher, their self-esteem is greater, and they are more socially adjusted. In fact, the most accurate indicator of a student's academic success in school is not tied to family income or social status, but the extent to which a family:

  • Creates a home environment that encourages learning.
  • Sets high but realistic achievement and career expectations.
  • Becomes involved in their child's education and in the community.

In addition to attending parent-teacher conferences and other special events, opportunities to get involved at your child's school abound. A few examples include:

  • Tutoring
  • Mentoring
  • Classroom read alouds
  • Classroom assistance
  • Non-classroom assistance (field trips, media center, etc.)
  • Organization involvement (PTA, foundation, School Site Council, etc.)
  • Before-and after-school programs

Volunteer Reminder

As a reminder, every year all volunteers are required to fill out a new Volunteer Application Form and a current TB Clearance Card on file (TB tests are valid for 4 years).

These items are required to be turned in to the school prior to any volunteering.

If your TB clearance has expired or if the school does not have a current one on file, testing may be acquired with your personal physician or the county offers affordable clinics. For a list of clinics visit the County of San Diego Web Site at http://www.sdcounty.ca.gov/hhsa/programs/phs/tuberculosis_control_program/clinic_services.html.

Please note that SDUSD no longer offers TB testing. Upon receiving a negative test it is required to provide a copy to the school nurse or SDUSD District nursing staff within 60 days.
